Dear Minister Michel,
As a [concerned citizen, member of ____, representative of ____etc.], I am writing to urge your government to swiftly table health data interoperability legislation, modeled on the former Bill C-72 (Connected Care for Canadians Act). By requiring digital health service providers to adopt common standards and enable secure information sharing across systems, this legislation is a vital step toward a more modernized health care system.
[Please personalize as you wish]
Every Canadian — and their health care providers — should be able to access their health information simply, securely, and digitally. Yet today, fewer than 40% of Canadians say they can see their own health records electronically, and only 29% of physicians share patient information outside their practice. This fragmentation undermines care coordination, patient safety, and system efficiency.
Access to personal health information, including immunization records and lab results, empowers Canadians to manage their care and helps build a more patient-partnered health system. Without interoperability, critical patient information is not always available when needed, leading to potential medical errors and unnecessary tests.
Reintroducing Connected Care legislation would not only improve the patient experience but also support a more resilient and efficient health workforce. Physicians spend hours each week on duplicative administrative tasks, including locating, collecting, and sharing health data across incompatible systems. This inefficiency contributes to burnout and reduces clinical hours, further straining access to care.
I echo the calls of the Canadian Medical Association and urge your government to prioritize this legislation and work with all political parties to ensure its swift passage.
Yours sincerely,
