Public Safety with a Purpose

At the end of June, the Province's decision to close the Sheldon Chumir Safe Consumption Site took effect.

The site has closed, but the people who used it are not leaving. That's why we need a plan and continued collaboration with the Province.

Improving Community Traffic Safety

I brought a motion to put up to $6 million into community traffic safety. Council passed it 15 to 0. Crosswalk beacons, speed cushions, curb extensions, safer streets, safer kids.

Last year, Calgary lost someone on our roads every ten days.

In Ward 8 we hear about a dangerous corner almost every week. Now there will be money to do something about it. Every parent like me has made the same calculation: Is this street safe enough to let my kids go on their own? Too many of us are answering "no." I want us to start saying "yes."

The Alberta Motor Association wrote a letter supporting this motion. That is the organization whose entire job is making our roads safer, because keeping you and your kids safe is never a debate.

Administration brings the program to Council in September. One of the main topics in our inboxes is traffic safety concerns, so my team and I are excited to work with our communities and tackle as many of these problem spots as we can, as soon as possible.

2027-2030 Service Plans and Budgets

Council has been working on the next four-year budget since the new year. It is one of the most important decisions Council will make this term.

This document decides how often your bus comes, how fast a fire truck gets to your door, how quickly your street gets plowed, and whether your neighbourhood rec centre is kept in good shape. It also sets which capital projects move ahead, from sidewalk replacement to new buses and CTrains.

The City's engagement on the budget closed in April, but that isn't the end of it. I will be at the table in November, and what I argue for there is shaped by what me team and I hear from Ward 8.

So, we want to ask something more specific than usual:

What in Ward 8 do you need working better?

And what would you trade to get it?

Killarney Park Upgrade

26 Avenue SW Improvement Construction Update

Construction is expected to begin in the coming days, starting with water utility upgrades between 14 Street SW and 18 Street SW. To reduce impacts, the project has been divided into east and west segments on either side of Crowchild Trail, each with its own construction phases. Phase 1 of the west segment (25 St SW to 26 St SW) begins this month, while Phase 1 of the east segment (14 St SW to 16 St SW) will begin once utility work is complete.

Our office has heard concerns about parking removal and questions about the bike lane design, including their impacts on residents and businesses along the corridor. I am continuing conversations about both the inconvenience these changes may cause and the traffic safety improvements the project aims to achieve. Westbrook Station Area Masterplan
