Hello Ward 8,

After eight days of hearing from the public, including many Ward 8 residents, today (Tuesday) at about 11:00AM marked the end of the Public Hearing on rezoning.

I want to start by thanking everyone who attended one of our three open houses, emailed our office, made a written submission, or participated as a speaker in the Public Hearing. It was so valuable for me and the whole Ward 8 team to hear from you directly about what matters on your street and in your community.

Wednesday, April 8 is the beginning of Questions of Administration which will lead to the vote on the main motion and any Amendments. Once that is completed, there may be Motions Arising related to other issues related to the hearing but not directly related to the motion before us.

As I write this, the upcoming vote is front and centre in my thoughts and I would be lying if I said I wasn’t struggling with my decision because I know for many it was front and centre in your minds during the election.

This will be the most difficult decision I have made so far as Ward 8 Councillor and I expect it will be the most difficult decision for some time to come. The place we all call home or aspire to call him is extremely personal for all of us.

People showed up with care, conviction, and a real desire to shape Calgary’s future. Even when views differed sharply, what stood out was a shared commitment to this city. City-building only works when people are willing to care, share their perspectives, and engage respectfully.

One thing has been clear throughout these conversations: growth isn’t optional. It’s happening. And as change takes place, the Ward 8 team and I are committed to keeping communication open, constructive, and receptive to everything affecting our communities – development or otherwise.

So, thank you again. As I settle into this role and the challenging decisions that come with it, I want to keep communicating, keep hearing what matters to you, and keep working together to accomplish the things we want to see happen in Ward 8.

All the best,

Nathaniel Schmidt

Ward 8 Calgary City Councillor

Bearspaw Feeder Main Update

Reinforcements to the Bearspaw South Feeder Main are complete. The system is stable and the feeder main has returned to service. All water restrictions have been lifted. Normal indoor and outdoor water use can now resume.

Even though the reinforcement work is complete, there is still a risk of failure until the new parallel pipe is in place. There will also be another planned feeder main shutdown this fall as they bring the new replacement pipe online. During the planned shutdown this fall, or if another break happens at any time, we will once again need everyone’s help to save water.

Coming up, there is a planned pipe inspection from April 9 to 11, where they will place a mechanical device called a pipe diver in part of the feeder main to assess its condition. Crews will have to briefly stop water flow to remove the pipe diver and then conduct water quality testing before restarting the pumps. Because of the short duration of this work, they do not expect water restrictions to be needed. However, this could change if unexpected issues arise.

Please visit the City's website for updated information as it's available.

2027 - 2030 Budget Feedback

Every four years, The City creates a budget that guides how we deliver services Calgarians use every day. We are now building the 2027–2030 Business Plans and Budgets, and we want to hear from you.

Your feedback will be used, along with other information — like Council’s Strategic Priorities, department plans, economic data and research like the Survey of Calgarians — to build a budget that is responsible and reflects the needs of Calgarians. A "What We Heard" report of this feedback will be shared publicly and provided to Council in July 2026 to support their decision-making process.

You can take part from until April 15 by answering the survey and by visiting pop-up events throughout the city.

Calgarians will also have a chance to speak directly to Council during budget Public Submissions in November 2026.

Spring Clean-up Street Cleaning

The City’s Spring Clean-up program, or street sweeping, removes debris and leftover materials from winter on the roadway. The program begins in mid-April (weather permitting) and runs through June, with community sweeping happening Monday through Fridays, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m

Residents may subscribe to e-mail and text alerts for multiple addresses, use the address‑specific street cleaning lookup tool, and access the interactive online map, which displays scheduled routes and cleaning progress.

Temporary “No Parking” signs are placed several days in advance of scheduled cleaning. In some locations, smaller signs (approximately three‑foot‑high) are placed a minimum of 24 hours prior to sweeping.

It's helpful if everyone can do their part to clear their streets of parked cars so the street sweepers can do their work as efficiently as possible and not be ticketed, so sign up for notifications and watch for signage by areas where you park, whether by your home or for work.

More information is available at calgary.ca/sweep.

Safe parking around schools

An issue we hear consistently in Ward 8 and around our city is concerns about traffic safety around our schools. School zones are busy places — especially during morning drop‑off and afternoon pick‑up. Children are walking, rolling and crossing streets while drivers are looking for quick places to stop. When parking rules aren’t followed, even for a short time, it can create real safety risks for kids and frustration for everyone nearby.

Please read more about how you can do your part to be safe around schools.

Calling all student filmmakers (K–12)!Create a 30-second video to help make Calgary’s streets safer—walking, wheeling, riding or parking safely around schools. Winners are showcased online and at a public screening at Central Library on Monday, April 27, 2026.

Find out how to enter, and please send your Ward 8 submissions to us!
